Photo: SEGUN BALOGUN                 The need of an efficient social security and reform of the Nigerian police force are some of the panacea recommended to the federal government to address the recent surge in the nation's security challenges as against suggested called for a break up. This was the postulation of an emergency conference of ethnic groups within Nigeria. The conference was organised by the Coalition of Ethnical Nationalities in Nigeria (CENN), last week in Lagos, to deliberate on the nation's precarious internal security and it was attended by representatives of 16 ethnic groups, with each group airing its grievance in a no-holds-barred manner. The high-point of the conference noted that the idea of secession, being mooted as the ‘only' solution on the recent security imbroglio in t...

Our bank directors are the highest paid in Africa

Image
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was working on modalities that would put a cap on what bank executives in the country could earn. Photo: FEMI ADEBESIN-KUTI            It is a good job if you can get it. Despite Nigerian banks not being ranked among the top ten banks in Africa, a NEXT investigation has revealed that Nigerian bank directors are the highest paid in the continent. Our analysis of the 2010 financial reports of Nigeria commercial banks alongside those of the biggest banks in the continent shows that directors in Nigerian banks earn far above their counterparts in other parts of Africa, who run even more stable, bigger and more profitable banks. Following concerns over the extravagant and reckless lifestyles of some bank chiefs, there were recent reports in the media suggesting that industry reg...

Church pastor Joseph Olowosagba said services had ended, but some church members were still inside when the explosion went off outside of a window. (AP) Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to give Maria Shriver a "very generous divorce settlement". The 'Terminator' star - who admitted in May to fathering a boy named Joseph with his family's housekeeper Mildred Baena 13 years ago while he was still married to the 55-year-old writer - is reportedly willing to give Maria more than she is owed under Californian law. An insider revealed to RadarOnline.com: "Arnold realises he is to blame for the collapse of his marriage. Maria was a loving wife and mother, and he doesn't think that any amount of money can minimize what he has put her through. He wants to do the right thing, and go above and beyond what is required of him under the law. "This is going to be a very amicable divorce, and it won't be played out in the media. ...

Breaking News (Terror in the land)Terror Alert: Masked Group Gives Nigeria FG 3 Week Ultimatum

Image
A faceless group calling itself Unknown Soldiers Squad (USS) Network that sent a threat email last week to a Masterweb writer, has given Nigeria federal government a three week ultimatum. In a comment post made on July 5, the group gave the federal government three weeks to convene a Sovereign National Conference (SNC) or face terror in the land. They wrote that if their deadline for a SNC is not met, the country would witness their wrath which would not spare both the army and Nigeria State Security Service (SSS) at roadblocks. They said the ratio of their casualties at roadblocks would be 50 to 1 (apparently 1 suicide bomber). USS comment post, just like their threat email of last week was apparently sent from a cyber cafe. The comment post was made on July 5, two days after the article on their threat email titled " Nigeria Terror Alert: Masked Group Threatens To Blow Abuja Into Pieces " was published. USS comment post is republished unedited below. ____...

Image
Oyo workers stone leaders over minimum wage July 6, 2011 11:08PM Officials of the Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress incurred the wrath of their members yesterday for accepting the old minimum wage as the June salaries for workers in the state. The state civil servants had threatened to begin a strike last Monday when it was confirmed that the government did not honour its promise to pay the workers N13,500 as their June salaries. Instead, the government paid the old minimum wage of N9,400, which the workers had vowed never to go back to. When Bashiru Olanrewaju, the state chairman of the NLC, mounted the podium to give a report on the meeting between the government's team and labour on Wednesday, he was not just booed by the highly disappointed members, pebbles were hauled at him and his executive committee members for accepting the offer. As it is the case in other states ...

CBN on aware of bank's minimum balance policy

Image
Central Bank unaware of bank’s minimum balance policy The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday dissociated itself from the United Bank of Africa Plc’s proposed N25,000 minimum balance for savings and current accounts held by its customers, saying it is unaware of the proposed policy. The apex bank’s deputy governor, Banking Operations, Tunde Lemo, told reporters yesterday in Abuja that the directive to that effect did not receive any approval from the banking sector regulator. Mr Lemo, who was giving clarifications on its recent cash collection policy, said the CBN would discuss with the management of the UBA to determine the rationale behind the proposed policy, pointing out that it would not encourage any commercial bank to initiate policies that would undermine the effort aimed at bringing the un-banked and under-banked Nigerians into the banking system. “This is not a Central Bank policy. We do not prescribe how banks conduct their business to a point that we begin to spe...

Sanusi Concerned about the negative impact the absence of an active commodity exchange is having on agricultural commodities trading in the country, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday asked the federal government to allow it take over the Abuja Securities and Commodities Exchange (ASCE) to help it deliver on its mandate. CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who was speaking at the opening of a two-day stakeholders’ conference on Nigeria’s Incentive-based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) in Abuja, said if properly positioned through adequate funding and clarification of its corporate governance policies, the Exchange could provide the platform fortrading in agricultural commodities. According to Mr Sanusi, following the dissolution of the country’s commodity marketing boards in 1986, commodity merchants had exploited the dearth in the coordination of the small holder farmers’ produce, thus creating a disconnection between primary producers, processors and ma...

She appeared before the Senate on Wednesday to be grilled by lawmakers over what she would do as a minister, part of the process of approving Jonathan's cabinet nominees. "I am really worried about the issue of making sure our budget is not eaten up by recurrent expenditure. How can we invest in capital if we're spending all our money on recurrent expenditures," Okonjo-Iweala told the hearing. "Can we run a budget that is not negative? Absolutely. We ca...

Controversy heightens over Aganga’s ministerial nomination BY INI EKOTT July 5, 2011 11:48PM print email The controversy over the appointment of Olusegun Aganga for a fresh ministerial term escalated Tuesday with the House of Representatives urging President Goodluck Jonathan to abide by the law that backs a minister per state and a court being asked to declare Mr Aganga’s nomination on the slot of Lagos State illegal. Mr Aganga, the immediate past Finance Minister, was re-nominated as a representative of Lagos State by Mr Jonathan for an unnamed portfolio, and is expected to be approved today by the Senate. Following constitutional provisions that entitles each state to a ministerial slot, the decision has rekindled debates about Mr Aganga’s Lagos State claim - a controversy that first erupted during his first term in 2010, with officials and lawmakers from the state pressing for a replacement. They allege Mr Aganga hails from Edo State, an argument not yet count...
